DESCRIPTION:
What most people don't know is that Barris spent close to two decades as a decorated covert assassin for the CIA, claiming to have killed over thirty people. He joined the CIA as an agent in the early 1960's. He infiltrated the Civil Rights movement, met with militant Muslims in Harlem, and was sent abroad to kill enemies of the American state, even as his game shows began to soar to ratings success. Suspense, excess, danger and exuberant fun come together in Chuck Barris's unlikely autobiography - the tale of a wildly flamboyant 1970s television producer of innovative game shows such as The Gong Show and The Dating Game. Confessions of A Dangerous Mind is a wild and improbable tale spiced with intrigue, sex , bad behaviour, and plenty of one-liners.
M. Burns said Diary of a Huckster. This is a surprisingly entertaining read, as I did not expect the wacky 'Gong Show' host to be such a good writer. He skillfully combines his public persona with his suspicious alter-ego to make a wildly original autobiography.True, the CIA part seems too incredible to be real, yet Barris writes with an impressively descriptive authenticity that leaves his reader wondering. Either he's read a ton of spy novels or he has some experience with the business, though perhaps not to the extent claimed here. If he is making it all up, he's got quite an imagination. He cites enough. Very Fun, Even If It's Not True Chuck Barris gives a very fun, expletive-filled reading of his book that adds a little more crediblity to his story as you wonder: Is this for real?I didn't know anything about Chuck Berris and maybe I still don't, but I was very entertained by this book and his reading of it. The CIA/Show business biography is a great little suspense story that keeps the reader interested even if it is a little predictable. There isn't a whole lot of detail on the behind the scenes of the Gong Show, etc. but it finds its place in the story.I say give it a listen or a read.. Chuck barris novelist? Can't determine if Chuck Barris was really a hit man for the CIA or not.Perhaps he did some work for them, but didn't work out, and they let himgo? Chuck is from the great city of Philadelphia. Even though Chuck is aneducated person, there is no record of him having been a smug ivy leaguer-- exaggeration? Hard to hide from the internet chucko! I'm sure theUniversity of Pennsylvania would be more than glad to confer an honorarydegree in return for a cool million dollar donation. Anyway, I wish Icould write as good as Chuck. He knows his stuff! Also, I would love tocompose m
'A weirdly compelling autobiography', Jonathan Ross, Daily Mirror .'Barris' life has been by turns insane, frightening, reckless and desparate his life story is nothing short of spectacular and brilliant to read', Front
