“This heavyweight tome is exceptionally well researched… For the vast majority of readers it will give an insight into how the Imperial German Navy’s principal warships were designed, built, fought and died ranged against the might of the Royal Navy in World War One.”Warship World

Heavily illustrated with line drawings and photographs, many from German sources, the book offers readers a fresh visual look at these ships. The battleships of the Third Reich have been written about exhaustively, but there is little in English devoted to their Second Reich predecessors. The book is arranged as a chronological narrative, with technical details, construction schedules, and ultimate fates tabulated throughout, thus avoiding the sometimes disjointed structure that can result from a class-by-class approach. This new book fills an important gap in the literature of the period by covering these German capital ships in detail and studying the full span of battleship development during this period. Pre-Dreadnoughts Amazon Customer A good account of the development of the German pre-Dreadnought battlefleet (and Kiel canal digging for a "two-seas" strategy). On the other hand, quite useless on the topic of the German Dreadought development history, really not much better on this topic than the 1986 "Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships: 1906-1921". So if you wish to buy this book to learn more about German WWI battleships, steer clear. ;). Fernando Wilson L. said Simply excellent. the very first complete analysis of the german. Simply excellent. the very first complete analysis of the german capital ship fleet including the predreadnought and ironclad fleet. Although specialised publications have covered many of the specific ships and classes, there was a sore need for a generalistic approach that might bind the entire process of the Kaiserliche Kriegsmarine`s capital ship development. Although it stays in the single volume logic, it is stilla very useful work. Also, very well diagramed and designed, with useful plans and schemes and very well printed photos. Excellent.
